February Birthstone – Amethyst

The amethyst is a purple quartz, and is a perfect combination of oval and red color, and can be found almost anywhere on earth.

The name amethyst is believed to have originated in the word “dream” because it was attributed to the qualities of ensuring good dreams. The name amethyst comes from a greek word meaning “not drunk.”

The amethyst, is a compound of quartz— the second most common substance on the earth’s shell. the amethyst receives its color from radiation, iron inclusions and the presence of other elements. the hardness of the amethyst (7 on the moh scale) is the same as the hardness of quartz, making it long-lasting and a good choice for jewellery placement.

Although the amethyst is usually identified by its purple color, it can actually be found in a variety of shades ranging from pinkish purple to deep purple, which looks more like blue or red, depending on the lighting.
